This tools is used to rearrange the order of the logical interfaces (ethN) to match the order of the physical ports of the machine.

Solution:

WARNING: this requires to take offline your machine and to reset your configuration.

NOTE: You can abort at any time if you press CTRL + C in the same time. No changes will occur.

  1. Assure yourself that the machine is not required to be online (clients are not active, downtime is not an issue, etc).
  2. Save the configuration.
  3. Export the configuration on another computer/machine or use the remote backup service.
  4. Connect to the machine via SERIAL CONSOLE or VIDEO TERMINAL
  5. Login as 'root'
  6. Execute 'calibrate'
  7. You'll be prompt with a warning that your configuration will be lost.
  8. Type 'y' to continue if you have saved your configuration or if you don't need it any more. Type 'n' to abort if you haven't saved your configuration and you stilll need it.
  9. If you hit 'n' return to step 1.
  10. You'll be prompted to "unplug all your network cables". Do it now.
  11. The utility will detect when all cables are unpluged and it will display "ok".
  12. Now you'll be asked to insert 1 cable (connected to another computer/bridge/switch/router) into port X coresponding to ethY (example: "Attach cable to port 1 (eth0)". This means to attach the cable to the port X that you want to be 'eth0').
  13. Wait untill the link is detected.
  14. You'll be prompted with "detected aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff."  where 'aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff' is the MAC address of the port detected with the cable plugged (link ok). This will map the port X='aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff' to ethY.
  15. Again it will be displayed the same message as point 10. Continue again from point 10 until you have mapped all your ports according to your needs.
  16. When all network ports have been mapped the script will display the "Cofigured mapping: " where it will display all the "ethY - aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff" mappings
  17. You be prompted to "Apply and restart [y/n]?"
  18. Answer "y" to save mapping and restart the machine with the new mapping.
  19. Answer 'n' NOT to save the mapping or restart.

After reboot the machine will have the specified hardware ports mapped.

NOTE: The port mapping is not portable from one machine on another.

NOTE: The port mapping is not affected by configuration restore.
